SAFETY TIPS FOR EXPLORING AUS

Australia is home to some of the most beautiful and wild natural places on earth. Sole Drift helps you discover these hidden spots, but nature can be unpredictable, and conditions can change quickly.

Your safety is always your responsibility, so please take a moment to read these important guidelines before heading out.

WATER SAFETY (FRESHWATER, ROCK POOLS, WATERFALLS & STREAMS)

Freshwater locations can be some of the most rewarding places to explore, but they also come with risks:

1. WATERBORNE HAZARDS

Natural freshwater can contain organisms and bacteria - especially during warm weather, drought, or stagnant conditions.

Avoid swimming if water looks stagnant, warm, or murky.

Follow local government alerts and signage.

Never submerge your head in water when signage advises against it.

2. DEPTH CHANGES

Rock pools and swimming holes change after rain.

Always check the depth before jumping

Rocks may sit just below the surface

3. SLIPPERY SURFACES

Waterfall areas and rocks can be extremely slippery.

Move slowly

Wear grippy shoes

Avoid running or climbing on wet rocks

4. FLASH FLOODING

Rain upstream can cause sudden surges even if it’s not raining where you are.

Avoid swimming after heavy rain

Be cautious in narrow gorges

BEACH, COVE & COASTAL SAFETY

Australia’s coastlines are stunning - but powerful.

1. RIPS AND CURRENTS

Swim at patrolled beaches where possible

If stuck in a rip: float, stay calm, and swim parallel to the shore

2. CHANGING TIDES

Tides can:

Cover access routes

Strand you in caves or coves

Create strong backwash around rocks

Check tide charts before visiting any remote beach or cove.

3. WAVES & ROCKS

Large swells can slam unexpectedly into rock platforms

Never turn your back on the ocean

HIKING, CLIFFS & REMOTE TRAILS

1. UNSTABLE EDGES

Avoid standing too close to cliff edges - they can crumble unexpectedly.

2. HEAT & DEHYDRATION

Australian heat can be extreme.

Always bring:

Plenty of water

Sun protection

A hat & long sleeves

Electrolytes for long hikes

3. NAVIGATION

Hidden spots may have:

No marked paths

No reception

Complex terrain

Download offline maps and tell someone where you’re going.

WILDLIFE SAFETY

Australia’s wildlife is beautiful, but remember it’s wild.

SNAKES

Most snakes avoid humans, but:

Stick to clear paths

Watch where you step or place your hands

Back away slowly if you see one

SPIDERS & INSECTS

Wear shoes in bushy areas and be cautious when reaching into crevices.

MARINE LIFE

Jellyfish can be seasonal (especially in northern Australia)

Shuffle feet in shallow water to avoid stingrays

Avoid harassing wildlife

ACCESS, ROADS & 4WD SAFETY

Many hidden gems involve dirt roads or unpaved access.

Check local weather before attempting difficult tracks

Travel with a second vehicle in remote areas

Bring recovery gear if using a 4WD

Avoid driving through floodwaters

WEATHER & NATURAL HAZARDS

Conditions can change quickly in Australia.

1. BUSHFIRES

Check fire warnings before visiting national parks

Never light fires in restricted areas

2. STORMS & FLOODS

Heavy rain can cause landslides, flash floods, and road closures

Waterfalls can swell suddenly

Check BOM (Bureau of Meteorology) alerts before visiting.

REMOTE LOCATIONS & COMMUNICATION

Many hidden locations have:

Zero phone reception

No amenities

Limited emergency access

Always:

Tell someone your plan

Bring offline maps

Carry a first-aid kit

Consider a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) for remote trips

GENERAL SAFETY PRINCIPLES

To stay safe on all adventures:

Follow all local signage & authority warnings

Respect private property and permitted access areas

Stay on marked paths when available

Avoid risky behaviour (cliff edges, jumping, diving)

Do not swim alone

Check conditions before entering water
