Stay in restored railway carriages at Discovery Parks and grab a bush breakfast cooked over an open fire.

6. Cardwell Spa Pool, Cassowary Coast
Hidden Gem Rating: ★★★★
These naturally turquoise mineral pools went viral on Instagram, and for a good reason. They’re absolutely gorgeous, and well worth checking out. The blue colour comes from dissolved calcium and magnesium picked up from underground springs.
The colour actually changes throughout the day, depending on the time of day and the amount of sunlight. Just make sure you respect the area as it’s not really set up for tourism and has quite strict rules about what you can and can’t do (such as no camping, no fires, and all litter, including cigarette butts, must be taken home).

Planning Your QLD Hidden Gems Trip
If you're based in Cairns, the Atherton Tablelands, Wallaman Falls, and Cardwell Spa Pool make for an easy northern loop. Got more time and a sense of adventure? The Gulf Savannah route through Undara Lava Tubes, Cobbold Gorge (opening 2026), and Boodjamulla (reopening November 2025) is properly remote – and properly worth it.
Brisbane weekenders, North Stradbroke Island and Girraween National Park are your go-tos when you need to escape without a massive drive.
Queensland's more than its reef and theme parks. These hidden corners have ancient lava tubes, platypus-filled creeks, and swimming holes you'll have to yourself – the kind of places that remind you why you came to Australia in the first place.
